Sheriff's Race
There is a lot going on in local sheriff’s races. In Carter County, incumbent Chris Mathes lost the primary election on May 6. He has now decided to run as a write-in candidate. Mathes originally said that he would not run as a write-in, but he has now changed his mind due to a large amount of support from the public for him to do so. Independent candidate, James Parrish, announced Friday evening that he would no longer be running. He is supporting Republican nominee Dexter Lunceford.
In Washington County, their primary has finally been decided through a recount. Incumbent Sheriff Ed Graybeal won by a narrow 12 votes. His challenger, Craig Ford, has yet to announce his next step.
"Movies on Main"
If you’re looking for something to do this Memorial Day weekend, Jonesborough has a great opportunity. This year is their 4th annual “Movies on Main”. Every other weekend throughout the summer they will have a large inflatable movie screen set up downtown offering a free movie. The movie begins at 8:30, and you are encouraged to bring canned food to donate to the local food pantry.
New Schools Coming to Carter County
The Carter County Commission voted unanimously this week to purchase a plot of land in Stoney Creek for the construction of a new middle school. The school system plans to build an additional middle school in Hampton to alleviate overcrowding in nearby elementary schools that currently house grades K through 8.
